Services

When I conduct the Closing for the purchase or refinance of your home, I provide the following services:

  • Prepare or review Offers to Purchase and Contract (Purchase Contracts) and offer advice for changes.  Provide advice to the Buyer(s) up to and through completion of the Closing.

  • Communicate with all parties to the transaction:  Buyers, Sellers, Selling Realtors, Listing Realtors and Lenders and obtain all information necessary to conduct the Closing.

  • Perform a title search of the records of the Register of Deed's office and the Clerk of Court's Office to insure that the Buyer(s) will have good title to the property being purchased or refinanced.
  • Order a survey of the Property if requested by the Buyer(s).
  • Submit a preliminary title opinion to the title insurance company to obtain the title commitment required for closing.
  • Coordinate with Buyer's Lender and collect all loan documents which need to be signed to consummate the Closing and fund the transaction.
  • Prepare and receive all documents signed by the Seller(s) in order to convey title to the Buyer.
  • Conduct the Closing, obtaining all the executed documents from the Buyer(s) and Seller(s) necessary to complete the Closing.
  • Record the deed conveying title from the Seller(s) to the Buyer(s) and the deed of trust, if any, to give the Lender a first lien on the property.
  • Disburse all funds from the Closing, including paying off existing loans and property taxes to remove any liens from the Property.
  • Submit a final title opinion to the title insurance company to have the final title policies issued to the Buyer(s) and Lender.
  • With the improved accessibility of public information on websites and the advent of electronic recording, I am able to perform purchase and refinance closings for properties from the mountains to the coast in most counties of the state.

After graduating from Emory University Law School in the spring of 1983, my wife, Cheryl Turney, and I moved to Cary in the Triangle.  Having passed the Georgia bar exam before leaving Atlanta, I prepared for the North Carolina bar exam, which I also passed in the spring of 1984.  My early legal jobs were with a small firm in Chapel Hill and as a solo practitioner after moving to Durham. 

I then worked for the firm of Perry, Patrick, Farmer & Michaux in Raleigh from March 1986 to October 1994.  After leaving that firm I have had my own firm from the fall of 1994 to the present.  I now live and work from my home in Pittsboro. 

During my legal career, my practice has focused on Real Estate.  It would be my great pleasure to offer my services for your legal needs.
